HOW YOUR BIOGRAPHY IS YOUR BIOLOGY

Jan 19, 2019 | Honoring Your Spirit

The other day, after doing several hours of paperwork, and before having to attend a business function, I was having what the Brits call a “Sit down and a cuppa (tea).”

After congratulating myself for practicing such good self-care by taking a break and having had a productive morning, my mind wandered to an unpleasant conversation I had many years ago where I called someone out on how inauthentically they’d shown up throughout our short-lived relationship.  Then my mind wandered to the situations that caused the conversation — also unpleasant. Next, I was recalling the entire relationship.  On the whole, it too was unpleasant.  I could feel my body going from a completely relaxed and satisfied state to tension and annoyance.  I thought to myself, “I will just think about something else.”  And I did.  In that moment I realized how the simple act of exercising the option to choose a different thought can change how we feel.  As quickly as the tension came on, it was gone, perhaps because I caught it so early.

I can’t help but wonder if staying physically and mentally healthy isn’t, in great part, just as simple as being more judicious about the thoughts we choose to think?
